The artworks in surfaces, deal with the topographical veneer of experience, bringing together a selection of experimental pieces that explore how the passage of time builds what the complete surface could be. Landscapes of material from Ahn’s performance artwork, Voy(age)ur (2014), alongside new sculptures, Tiles (2019), contemplate what it means to hold on to things that may already be lost and the impact left behind on the physical plane. The materials themselves are decaying, contracting, dehydrating, oxydizing, and are, in part, entombed. Thinking about the perennial acts of building, remembering, and preservation, Ahn points to the fragility of material entanglments taken out of context, addressing them as pseudoarchaeological containers where temporal, cultural, and historical narratives collide.
